Outings Leader
Want to bring people outside to explore, enjoy, and help protect our region’s most beautiful places? Become a Sierra Club outing leader!
Want to bring people outside to explore, enjoy, and help protect our region’s most beautiful places? Become a Sierra Club outing leader for the Pennsylvania Chapter!
The Sierra Club Outings program trains volunteers to lead a variety of outings — from short local hikes to kayak trips to service trips. As a certified Sierra Club Outings Leader, you’ll join a community of local outdoor enthusiasts who love to engage others to explore, enjoy and protect the outdoor places you love.
All Sierra Club Outings Leaders must:
- Be current members of the organization (we can help with that if cost is a barrier)
- Be over the age of 18 (although there are youth leader roles for those age 14-17!)
- Take the Outings Leader Training (offered twice a year, there is also a self paced virtual option)
- Be certified in First Aid
- Lead a provisional mentored outing (your first outing will have a mentor to give you pointers)
- Get approved to run outings by your local Outings Chair
- Agree not to run any outings you do not have the skill to run
There are no requirements on how many outings you need to run a year. We understand that life gets busy and you don't always have the time to do fun things like outings. We would love it if you could run at least 2 a year though! These outings could be as simple as a walk in a city park or as complex as a backpacking trip on the Loyalsock Trail...the choice is up to you!
