Clean Break Team

Want to make a difference on climate change? Join the Clean Break Team: Help us transition from Dirty Fossil Fuels to Clean Renewable Energy!

Clean Break is a committee of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club that advocates for a just transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean renewable energy in Los Angeles County.

Oil and gas production and distribution pose unacceptable risks to the health and safety of our communities; environmental quality, including air, water and soil; natural resources; geology and seismic activity; and climate.

These risks are of particular concern in Los Angeles County where many oil and gas wells are located in close proximity to densely populated urban neighborhoods, resulting in toxic emissions in low-income communities of color that are already disproportionately impacted by urban pollution.

Our volunteers took on big oil in Culver City, leading to a historic 2022 agreement finalizing plans to phase out and clean up oil wells in Culver City.

Progress in Culver City led to our major victory over big oil when the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance that bans new oil drilling and declares existing oil drilling a nonconforming land use in unincorporated Los Angeles.

In Dec, 2022, we won a another major victory over big oil when the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to phase out all oil drilling in Los Angeles and ban new wells.

We are also reducing fossil fuels by encouraging more cities to use more clean energy. Through our efforts, approximately 3,000,000 people in 21 local municipalities will be using 100% renewable energy through the Clean Power Alliance. And we are working with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to choose the best options from the LA100 plan. We need your help ensuring that these efforts are equitable and successful!

We highly encourage all interested parties with diverse backgrounds to apply!
