Trail Crew

Help to build and maintain hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains and adjacent parkland!

Created in 1972, the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force is an activist branch of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter. Armed with legal knowledge, trail building tools, and respect for our natural ecosystems, we seek to preserve these mountains for many generations to come.

We invite you to join our Volunteer Trail Crew (which has been active since 1976) and help us to maintain the network of trails that support responsible recreational use of the Santa Monica Mountains and adjacent parkland. We designed and built, and now continue to care for, many of the Santa Monica Mountains' most beloved hiking trails. Several of these laid the foundation for the Backbone Trail (designated as a National Recreation Trail), including Musch Trail, Topanga Nature Trail, Dead Horse, Piuma Ridge, Saddle Creek, Fossil Ridge, Hondo Canyon, Ray Miller, Wood Canyon Vista, and Coyote Trail.

Subscribe to our mailing list for prompt email notifications about our upcoming trail work projects. Select "Saturday trail work schedule" as one of your mail preferences, along with any other topics that interest you.

Trail work takes place on Saturday mornings from October thru June. Volunteers are welcome to participate as little or often as their schedule permits. No experience is necessary; complete training and guidance will be given. We provide the tools. Our work includes trimming back vegetation, removing invasive non-native plant species, repairing erosion and landslides, correcting water drainage problems, installing bridges and other structures, and much more.

Environmental Awareness credits are available for Sierra Club leader candidates pursuing an "I" rating.
