Forest Protection Committee

Member of the chapter committee that protects chapter and state forests.

If you love forests and nature and are an activist, this is the committee for you! This committee hosts educational events and takes concrete action to protect forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains and throughout California.

In 2019, we had speakers on the Usal Redwood Forest, biochar and wildfire.

The Forest Protection Committee seeks to protect these forests through interfacing with local agencies that manage them such as the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.

We have also helped host a wildfire summit to educate residents about wildfire and how to reduce their vulnerability. We have attended local Firesafe Council meetings.

The committee has also been worked to stop clearcutting statewide in California. The committee has passed resolutions calling for an end to clearcutting in six chapter cities and the MIdpeninsula Regional Open Space District as well as elicited supportive action from 2 cities and Santa Clara County.

The have also begun to get involved in PG&E's aggressive tree removal program, which is active now in Santa Cruz County and taken out permits for Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

Committee members meet with local state legislators to advocate for forest protection.
