The Stop Clearcutting California Campaign is looking for the Letter Writing Team. If you love forests and nature and like to write, this is the committee for you!

California has beautiful forests, which are important to our water supply, addressing climate change, air purification, and wildlife. However, these benefits are reduced by aggressive clearcutting, a logging method that involves removing all vegetation, spraying with herbicide to prevent future growth, and planting conifer seedlings. The result is a same age, same species tree crop, which produces inferior wood and burns hotter and quicker if it catches fire. A conifer plantation is not as beneficial to humans and wildlife as a natural forest or a selectively logged forest with diverse trees and shrubs of different ages. Such a forest always sequesters and stores carbon, retains water, and purifies the air.

Clearcutting in California can be eliminated or reduced through legislation or regulations by the Board of Forestry or the California Air Resources Board. In order for these agencies to take action, the public must demand it.

Currently. the campaign works to create a public demand for change through social media, tabling at the California Democratic Convention, Earth Day events, and other opportunities, In 2020, we would like to significantly increase the number of letters published in newspapers. We will train members on how to spot opportunities in newspapers for letter writing and how to write effective letters that have a good chance of being published.

Successful members have some of the following qualities:

knowledge of forests, state, and local government processes. good writing skills. work well with others Responsible
