Legislative Advocate
Meet with your legislator or their staff to discuss priority Sierra Club California legislation
The California Advocacy Committee (CAC) is seeking Sierra Club members in the Angeles Chapter who are willing to meet with their legislator or their staff to discuss priority legislation. Staff will provide the talking points.
CAC's mission is to support staff advocacy through the establishment of a network of trained volunteers who can contact their legislator when needed by staff. Influence legislative outcomes in Sacramento via outreach to district offices.
We accomplish our mission by building a network of chapter volunteer advocates who are willing to meet with legislators, when staff need their help.
Being an advocate involves the following:
- Attending a one-hour training on how to advocate, the current bills we are lobbying about, and CAC processes.
- Reading the talking points of the bill(s) you will discuss.
- Meeting with other advocates to plan the meeting.
- Meeting with the legislator or their staff.
Each meeting probably takes 3-4 hours. You may be asked to participate in 0-3 meetings per year.
CAC benefits Sierra Club California, the volunteers, and the chapter. It.
- Improves legislative outcomes and builds stronger legislator relationships.
- Engages chapters in the work being done in Sacramento on their behalf — introducing them to our lobbyists, legislation, and how to lobby. It forges a new relationship between chapters and Sierra Club California staff and their work.
- Strengthens the chapter’s relationship with their legislators by creating additional opportunities to engage.
- Provides new meaningful volunteer opportunities.
If you would like an opportunity to meet with your legislator, please apply to be an advocate.
