Vermont Chapter Treasurer
The Vermont Chapter is seeking a volunteer Treasurer to help maintain our finances.
Join Our Team as a Volunteer Treasurer! The Sierra Club is the oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States, founded in 1892, by conservationist John Muir. It currently operates as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit with over 3.5 million members and supporters across 64 chapters.
Core Mission & Activities The Sierra Club's mission is to: explore, enjoy, and protect the "wild places of the earth" while promoting responsible use of ecosystems and resources. The Club's work is primarily divided into three categories:
- Conservation & Climate: Leading the "Beyond Coal" campaign to retire coal plants and transitioning to a 100% clean energy economy among many other conservation & climate protection initiatives.
- Outdoor Outings: Organizing over 15,000 annual trips ranging from local hikes to international excursions to foster a connection with nature.
- Political Advocacy: Lobbying for environmental legislation and endorsing political candidates who support environmental protection.
Organizational Structure National & Local Reach: Headquartered in Oakland, CA, the Club is a "grassroots" organization made up of 64 Chapters and over 300 Groups within the Chapters. The Club maintains a presence in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Sierra Club Foundation: A separate 501(c)(3) entity that serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Club's charitable and educational program.
National Finance Department: Provides on-line support and coordination of Chapter accounting and finance responsibilities and reporting.
Primary Responsibilities of the Chapter Treasurer Accounting Responsibilities: review invoices and other payment requests for accuracy, obtain approval for payment, and pay invoices promptly. Deposit receipts. Record transactions in Quick Books On-line. Note: The Sierra Club is in the process of transitioning to Net Suite for accounting and reporting purposes. Provide timely reporting of all required financial information to National and the Chapter Executive Committee on a monthly and annual basis.
Grants: Ensure that Sierra Club Foundation grants and restricted funds are spent in accordance with donor restrictions and that all expenditures are documented. Assist in the preparation of grant applications.
Budget: Coordinate between National and the Chapter Executive Committee in the preparation of an annual Chapter budget. Year End Reporting & Coordination with National
The position varies in terms of time commitment. Generally, it will require 8 to 10 hours per month, with an increased time commitment amount during budget preparation and year-end reporting. ***
Desired Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Passion for the work and mission of the Sierra Club and the Vermont Chapter.
- A working knowledge of Quick Books On-line and Net Suite. National will provide support in relation to dealing with issues and questions regarding the software.
- A working knowledge and proficiency with Excel and other Office software.
- Ability to remain flexible about duties and expectations as the Vermont Chapter of the Sierra Club grows and changes.
- An understanding of the different types of Nonprofit Tax structures: 501(c)(4), 501(c)(3), and Political Action Committees.
